Ice and Medicine at the end of the earth

28. What is the food is like? Is it cafeteria food or do you have an opportunity to make your own food?

Brett,

For part of this question I am going to refer to you to Question Number 9.  It is mostly cafeteria food.  It was great in the beginning, but as more people arrive on base, the quality of food has decreased.  I can imagine that cooking for 1200 people is not an easy task.  Luckily, we do have some other options.  The menu for today is:

Wednesday, December 8
LUNCH 11:00 AM-1:00 PM
Chicken Cordon Bleu
Beef Tortellini
Vegetarian Shepherd’s Pie

DINNER 5:00 PM-7:30 PM
Spanish Chicken Stew
Spanish Style Beef
Spanish Zucchini Torta

MIDRATS 12:00 AM-1:00 AM
Baked Chicken
Beef Tenderloin
Pesto Tempeh

If the Spanish theme did not appeal to me, I can go to Burger bar!  One of the bars in town cooks hamburgers and french fries on Wednesday and Sunday.  For $3 and a long wait, you can eat away from the dining hall.  That is usually a good option.  I am also lucky because there is a kitchen in the medical clinic.  I enjoyed some cheese and bread for lunch today in the kitchen.  T.J. brought me a treat during is quick visit!  Our nurses, dentist and lab tech like to cook.  So, occasionally we have home made treats!  We also occasionally have the option of renting a house on base for parties.  We had  a clinic party last month where we cooked and grilled.  I think we will have another holiday party, and I am hoping for grilled steak!
