Ice and Medicine at the end of the earth

48. How does the ocean freezes if it has salt in it?

T.J. emailed the following:

Ali, I think it’s time to try a little experiment.  You will need plastic cups, water, 2 table spoons of salt, and a freezer.  In the first cup, add 8 oz (one cup) of water. In the second cup, add 8oz of water and 2 table spoons of salt; the water will have a salinity similar to that of the ocean (it will be a little saltier).
Now put both cups in the freezer. Check on them every thirty minutes and record what you see.  Make sure to note if there are any differences in how quickly they freeze. I checked them for two and a half hours.  Let me know what you find and we can compare notes.
