Ice and Medicine at the end of the earth

20. Have your sleeping patterns changed since the sun doesn’t set anymore? How does that affect your daily routine?

Had I answered this question one week ago I would have surprisingly told you that the 24 hours of sun does not affect my sleep or daily routine.  However, in the past week, that has changed.  I am not sure if it is because I finally caught up on my residency sleep deprivation or if my body just got confused.

I had been in a good routine of going to bed around 10PM and waking up at 6:30 for work.  It is always bright out.  The main change in our routine is that we can go hiking at any time of night or day.  I stick to my day night schedule though.  It also allows the base to have shift workers doing the same activities day and night.  They can still fly helicopters and work outside while I am sleeping.  We have an on call doctor to accommodate the night workers.

Two nights ago I was playing board games until 10 PM.  I was tired and decided to head to my dorm to go to bed.  I opened the galley door and the sun was as bright as it was at noon.  The walk to my dorm woke me up and I could no longer convince my body that it was bed time.  I was so tired last night that I slept easily.  The dorms do not have many windows and our room is very dark.  It is the walk to the dorm that messes with my sleep/wake clock.

I miss sunsets 🙂
