16. What happens if the power goes out? How do you get electricity?
Building 196 is our power plant:
It was built in 1981 and it houses the central power plant for the station. It houses six diesel engine generators. There is also a Stand By Power Plant (SBPP) if this one were to go down. We had a check of the back up system last week and it was very uneventful. We lost power for a minute or two before the back up power started. There are also generators around the base that can provide electricity to critical areas (ie. medical, fire).
An interesting fact about the power in town is that we have wind turbines that feed into our electricity grid. It produces enough power to supply the New Zealand Scott base with all of their power with some leftover. McMurdo and Scott base share the power grid.
