12. Can you go skiing or snowboarding, or maybe even go kite flying?
That is the first question I asked after accepting this job in Antarctica. My cross country skis arrived late last week, and my boots arrived today. I plan to skate ski when the weather (and snow) warms up a bit. I heard that it is actually too cold to get much glide on the skis currently. There are many great ski trails for classic and skate skiing around McMurdo base. Most of them require a ski buddy and a radio in case the weather changes. I am really looking forward to it.
As for the other type of skiing – downhill, that is a bit trickier. The terrain here is overall pretty flat. The New Zealand base nearby does have a rope tow and a downhill ski run. We have to be invited by one of the Kiwi’s to use their ski run though. If you are lucky enough to get an invite, our rec department rents skis and snowboards.
I am assuming you could fly a kite, although I have not seen anyone do it. With the winds we have been having lately, I would be worried about flying out to sea.
